This is something you shouldn’t do at all, but in this article, we will understand how it’s possible to touch a live wire without getting hurt! This may seem something impossible but in actuality it is possible. If you understand the science behind this and how actually electricity works then you can do the impossible.
☠ Warning ☠
✘ Do not try this at home It’s very dangerous.
Mains AC voltage can kill you.
We all know how dangerous mains voltage could be and that’s why we always stay cautious while working with electricity. When you touch a live wire let’s say 220V AC the current flows through your finger and hand then through the body and it sinks to the ground.
Because mains voltage uses Neutral, Phase and Earth so it has reference to ground. The ground is a very essential factor here, for now just pretend neutral and earth are the same (they are actually about the same when it comes to the Mains line).
The ground is a low level or you can also say 0V. Voltage flows from high to low (Ex. 6v➟0v) voltage in simple words the voltage sinks to the ground as the neutral or earth is considered as a low point. The mains voltage is usually 220v or 110v and when you connect it to the ground the current flows towards the low voltage level.
When you are standing on the ground you are connected to it, which implies that you are now at a low voltage or 0v level. As soon as you are on a low voltage level now the electricity treats you as a ground and it can flow through your body.
If you somehow can keep yourself away from the ground then the mains current will not have a path to flow means it will not sink to the ground.
Suppose you are sitting on the bed and you touch a phase wire of the mains voltage supply at this time you are not really connected to the ground because on the bed the earth is not connected directly to you. Even if it’s connected by the bed itself the bed offers high resistance against electricity (Think of wooden bed). At that time you have no reference to the ground thus, the electricity does not have a path to flow and because of that, you will not receive an electric shock. Even if you get a shock it would be very minimal and depending on the mattress and foam used for making the bed will affect the resistance, more resistance and you will reduce the chances of shock.
At this time your body has no reference to the ground. You are now in a situation that is called floating and your body is considered as an object that has no reference to the ground and thus you won’t receive any shock.
This is possible only because of the resistance provided by the bed and mattress. You can add more dry clothes, plastic, thermocol (Plastic Foam), wood, and other high resistive material to get more resistance, and thus less connected you will be front the ground.
The most important thing to note here is that do not even think of touching other neutral or earth wire and if you touch a neutral or earth wire you will receive a very dangerous shock.
So in simple words stay away from the ground while you’re working with the mains line. Make sure to wear shoes that will also provide very good/high resistance and if you accidentally get in contact with a live wire you will not receive a lethal amount of electric shock. The shoe must be dry for more resistance you can also wear gloves, and this is why we wear gloves while working with electricity. Gloves provide good resistance and decrease the chances of receiving a shock.
Now you know about the science behind the working of electricity. This is the first very important thing to learn when you are working with electricity and everyone must know about this.
