What is the difference between Electrical and Electronics?

Most people tend to mix these terms but there are significant differences between Electrical and Electronics. We will learn some of these differences.

Electrical (Electrical Engineering) :

Electrical engineering deals with voltage, current, and power like power grids mains voltage supply generators, etc. Electrical is the core department of study of electricity, where we study how current flows how voltage and current work.

For example transformers, bulbs, resistors are electrical components.
Electrical deals with high voltage mostly AC, power grids, power supply, etc.

Key Points about Electrical :

  • Electrical deals with generation, controlling, distribution, and conversion of electrical energy.
  • The electrical do not use semiconductor materials.
  • The electrical devices produce the voltage and current.
  • It works mostly on Alternating Current (AC).
  • Electrical uses high voltages 110V,220V,440V and very high as 11KV(11,000 Volts),33KV,66KV (Kilo Volts), etc.
  • It consists of passive components like Resistor, capacitor, inductor, Fuse, Relays etc.
  • The electrical can’t do computing and logic stuffs.
  • Example : Motor, Generator, Transformer, Alternator, Switches, Bulbs  etc. are the example of electrical devices.

Electronics (Electronics Engineering) :

Electronics is a sub-branch of electrical or in simple words electronics is part of electrical. In electronics, we deal with semiconductor materials like silicon and germanium.

Electronics components are made of semiconductor materials like a diode, transistor, led, ICs, etc.

Electronics is nothing without electrical because every circuit requires electricity to work, So electronics works along with electrical.

Electronics mostly deals with low voltage DC, signals, switching, logic, etc.

Key Points about Electronics :

  • Electronics deals with switching, amplifying, and controlling of electrical energy using electronics equipment/components.
  • Electronics use Semiconductor materials.
  • Electronic devices control/manipulate the voltage and current.
  • Direct Current (DC) used in electronics but AC can also be used.
  • Electronics use 3V,3.3V,5V,9V,12V,24V,48V mostly less then 50 Volts.
  • It consists of passive and active components like Transistor, OP-Amps are some example of active components.
  • Electronic devices can do computing and logic stuffs.
  • Diode, Transistor, OP-Amps, ICs, Microcontroller (Arduino), etc. are example of some electronic devices.

Without any doubts now, you understand what are the differences between electrical and electronics.
